The Grey Rock Method

Becoming Uninteresting to the Predator

The Strategy

Narcissists and psychopaths thrive on **emotional reactions**—whether they are positive (praise) or negative (anger/crying). Grey Rocking is the art of giving them **nothing**.

By acting as boring and non-responsive as a plain grey rock, you starve them of the "narcissistic supply" they need to stay interested in you.

How to Grey Rock

Short, Neutral Answers

Use one-word responses whenever possible. "Yes," "No," "Maybe," or "I'm not sure." Don't elaborate or offer personal details.

Avoid JADE

Do not **J**ustify, **A**rgue, **D**efend, or **E**xplain. If they accuse you of something, a simple "I hear you" or "Okay" is enough to end the loop.

Disengage Emotionally

Keep your voice monotone. Avoid eye contact if possible. Don't show frustration, anger, or even happiness around them.

Keep it Professional
  • Treat the person like a stranger at a bus stop. You are polite but completely closed off. Share no news about your life.
  • Important Warning

When you first start Grey Rocking, the abuser may **increase** their efforts to get a reaction. This is called an "Extinction Burst." They might become more aggressive or cruel to see if the "old you" is still in there. **Stay firm.** Eventually, they will get bored and move on to a more "exciting" target.

    Your Silence is Your Power.

Grey Rocking is a temporary survival tool. It is not a way to live forever, but a way to protect yourself until you can safely exit the dynamic or the environment.
